The immense popularity of Leon Minkus’ Don Quixote was thanks in large part to American Ballet Theatre artistic director Mikhail Baryshnikov’s 1983 production, broadcast nationwide on public television from the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center. Set in classical Spain, Don Quixote features some of Marius Petipa’s most captivating choreography, with daring leaps and high extensions woven together with rousing corps de ballet segments showcasing the great Flamenco tradition.
